9 Pointers for a Squeaky Clean Resume ~ Ikya Global EDU

Are you looking for a job and wondering where to start? Resume is the spot – A classy and impressive resume is the first and the most important thing to work on! Unless you get this right, the next steps won’t be easy to explore coz this is going to be your face till you actually meet them face-to-face. You want to look good, don’t you?
Now while you’re cleaning it up, make sure you remove the following elements out of sight.

1. Information about your schooling:

Well if are applying for a job, you must most likely have completed your college. This being the case, in all certainty please remove any information you have mentioned about your middle and high school, especially if you're way past the year of graduation school information is best pulled out.

2. Your average or percentage:

There is no reason to insert this piece of information unless the company asks for it explicitly - more so, if you have completed your college years ago.

3. Unassertive Language:

Use the language that is assertive and involved. Making weak references is a no-no! Instead of using the “familiar” with say “trained in” or "learned” say “worked on”. Use of power verbs makes your resume stronger. It’s better to sound like a doer rather than a trainee.

4. Pictures:

Well, considering this is a selfie generation, there may be tendency to put up pictures on your resume. Please do not do this unless specifically asked for or the industry demands it. You will not be judged based on how you look unless you are in fashion industry. And you may risk projection yourself as unprofessional.

5. List of ad-hoc jobs:

It doesn’t talk well of you if you have a string of short-lived jobs. It will make the employers feel that you lack focus. So, it’s best to take them out. The only exception to this rule is - if you have worked on a very prestigious project or a big company/if you’ve had a long sabbatical and has nothing else to mention. Even if that is the case, please exercise caution in this aspect.

6. Statement of objective:

It is passé to write an objective statement plus it is of no specific significance. It only tells what you are looking for which in the first instance is of no importance to any company. It’s is actually difficult to come up with a head-turning statement and mind you, a bad one actually might do harm. So our advice would be to totally eliminate it.

7. Basic Skills:

All you have to flaunt is your MS Word skills, it is best to not mention it. Add this feature only if you have some advanced or uncommon skills.

8. Too much personal information:

Don’t be too liberal with posting about your personal info. Abstain from mentioning any religious, political or social issues. It is best to keep it neutral unless you have strength to display through that.

9. Lengthy Resume:

Keep the length of the resume limited to 1 page or at the maximum 2.  Keeping will highlight your most important achievements. It’s time to eliminate garbage and trim it prim n proper.

Just take care of the above and you are all set!

Informal Yet effective Ways to Write Your Cover Letter ~ Ikya Global EDU

You have finally found a suitable job to apply for after several weeks of tireless effort. The next thing on your agenda must be to really impress the employer by making a such a big entry not giving a choice to say No to you!

The first tool to make the best first impression is you COVER LETTER! If this doesn’t impress your resume loses its chance to go to the next level.  About 21% percent of the employers opine that a creative and a unique cover letter is an instant hit! So lose no chance to showcase your personality through your cover letter. This is one sure way of standing out!

Let’s see a few ways in which you can make your cover letter shine through creatively:

1. Numbers all the way:
Choose to use numbers to showcase your experience in your cover letter - wherever you can! Employers love numbers especially when they talk about your expertise! Quick way to understand your achievements.
Example: 1 project, 89 hours, 21 team members, 8 weeks - That’s what it took me to leash out the most prestigious event!
As an event management consultant I’ve acquired valid  experience pulling off massively successful events in spite of tight deadlines. This is what makes me a perfect fit for the challenging role you are offering! ‘

2. Use a famous quote:

At the outset this idea may seem a little to dramatic but if you use the right quote which in some way summarized your experience and learning it can work wonders to you!
Although it may seem cliché to use a quote in your cover letter, when used well and in context, a quote can add more value to your cover letter. Pick a quote that fits the context and clearly show the relation between that and your way of working and support with credentials.
Example: “Accountability breeds response-ability.” Stephen R. Covey once said!
As a manager, I have lived up the quote because it is the single most important path to success. I always believed in motivating and driving my team and have taken up the accountability of their successes alike their failures. I think t has proved good for all of us in more ways than one.
This leadership skill is what makes me a great fit to the role.

3. Tell a mini anecdote:

Telling a story in your cover letter allows employers to see your more personal side. When employers search for candidates, they’re not only looking at your qualifications, but they also know if you’d be a good fit for their culture, too. By telling a story that relates to your career path, it will allow you to reveal your genuine self to the reader.
Example: I fell in love with basketball at a very young age. Not only do I love the sport itself, but also I loved the numbers behind the scores. Because of this life-long interest in sports and numbers, I believe I would be an excellent candidate for the Data Analyst position for the Washington Wildcats.

4. Talk about your passions and goals:

A little bit of storytelling on what your passions are and why you chose this as your field will disclose a great deal about your virtues.  Employers always look forward to passionate employees who perform brilliantly because their personal passions blend into their profession. They need no external motivation.
Example: Social media and content marketing are not only my passions but also important elements in the field of Digital Media marketing… My skills and experience coupled with my enthusiasm are the reasons why I fit into the position on offer!

5. Start small and smart:

Your opening line is the eye-catcher! Keeping it simple and short is the key…  Do bear in mind tha the employers do not have all the time in the world to go through paragraphs, but, well, he may if  yours sounds that interesting! Make it hard to put down.
Example: Designing is the source of my being. Let me tell you how it is going to change the game of your campaign.

There are several other ways of making it creative. Only thing to bear in mind is the audience you are writing it for and draft based on what they want to hear.

Nail down your HR Interview Questions, like a boss!

For those looking for shift in the job, HR round can be a little anxious. Below are a few tips that will help you have a smooth sail through the round. The pre-condition however is to maintain your calm and cool. Keep your answers short and to the point. Don’t panic if the question is difficult, take your time think for a moment and answer peacefully, and in case you don’t know, say so politely with a smile.

Here are some typical questions that you can expect and the befitting answers. Make sure this is not a by-heart-and-say-sheet; remember to customize your answers and BE GENUINE!

1. Tell me about yourself:

This is a chance for you to speak about your main attributes. To answer this impressively, identify your strengths and memorize them. Speak about them confidently and also about your qualifications, career history and core areas. Lay stress on skills that are apt for the job you are applying for.

2. What have your achievements been to date?

Pick an achievement that is fairly recent and work-related. Talk about it in context of the skills that you used to make it happen. Also talk about the resultant benefits that the company derived by employing your method. For example, ‘my greatest achievement has been to design and execute an automated payroll software that is unique and which helped the company to raise funds for its next venture, free-hand!

3. Are you happy with your career-to-date?

This HR interview question is actually about your confidence, self-worth and career goals. Of course your answer must be a big ‘YES”, followed by a description of everything about your career that made you happy. Each time you say something good/bad, it must be validated by a suitable justification.

4. What is the most difficult situation you have had to face and how did you tackle it?

The main intention behind asking this question is to really understand what your definition of a difficult situation is and to see how capable you are at solving a situation like that. To look impressive, pick and talk about the most difficult situation which you solved, keep it simple and short. Talk about how you navigated through the problem picking the available solutions that you picked and how you emerged successfully!

5. What do you like about your present job?

This is a pretty upfront HR interview question. But can be a little tricky to answer this one. Instead of randomly answering this make sure your skills are aligned to the reasons your are mentioning. Look happy and peppy.

6. What do you dislike about your present job?

This is a pretty smart question from the interviewer. Make sure you don’t dwell in too many details as it may help them take cues on your weaknesses. The best way to answer this is to keep the answer generic, like slow-hikes and delayed decision making process and not stress on personal reasons. Play extremely smart here.

7. What are your strengths?

This is one question that you almost certainly know you are going to be answering. So make no excuse about not being prepared about this one! Identify about 5 of your core strengths and motion the top 3. Talk about them. For ex: your ability to be a team player, learn quickly, peppy attitude etc. It won’t stop there, mind you; you may be asked to quote examples. Just be doubly sure and prepared.

8. What is your greatest weakness?

Have you already thought about answering this one with “NONE.” Well, that’d be a blunder. The best way to answer this to pick an area of the job that’s not a must have for the job and say you don’t have required experience although you have the ability to buck up. Get smart and creative with this one.

9. Why do you want to leave your current employer?

For this HR interview question the best thing would be to say that you are looking for growth opportunities, learning and a shift in environment. You may also say you can handle more responsibility which the present job doesn’t offer.

Remember to NEVER talk bad about the company and do not quote salary as an answer as it says that salary is your primary motive to work.

10. Why have you applied for this particular job?

Make sure this answer from you, nails down the fact that you are the best fit for this job. Make them realize you possess the required skill-set and that you will enjoy doing this and will be a team player. Also, the cherry on the icing – mention some good aspects about the hiring company.
And you are almost there!

Pro-Tips For Your First Time Interview – Make sure you crack it!

Waiting the lobby for your name to be called while wondering what will be asked and how would you fare while biting nails – Does this scene sound familiar?

Considering all the experience you have had thus far is of a few internships, you are new in the Industry with no major experience to quote, facing your first interview can be quite nervous. The flip side is actual face-to-face interaction with the potential employer is a fab chance to make the best first impression and get hired! Let’s see how you can use it:

1. Know the Company, like really!

The least the potential employer will expect from the candidate is that they do their home work and research about the company. It basically conveys that you are genuinely interested and serious about the role. It is absolutely essential to research well about the company you are applying and really understand their product/service, mission, vision and functions. This information could come handy when you answer a few questions.
This will guarantee a great first impression!

2. The Introduction

‘Tell me about yourself’ is one of the very first and the most predictable question. Not being pepared for this with a kickass answer plain is lame!
Consider this question is an opportunity for you to set the tone of the interview and to help him see the aspects that’s you’d want him to see. Do not waste this opportunity by reciting your resume. Instead prepare before for a short and enthusiastic response that outlines why you are the best fit for the job!

3. What Can You Offer?

Clearly understand the detailed profile and description of the job you are applying for. You answer to this question should clearly justify why you can shine here, each point you make must be supported by an instance where you used the particular ability before.

4. Act Confident

Confidence is the key for all successful endeavors and same applies to interviews as well. Make sure carry yourself in a way that makes you come across as confident (not too smart, mind you). And really be confident, at the moment, whatever you are, you are. Remember faking is no good and will stand right out! So, Acting is a no-no!

5. Never Lie In Your Resume

Never, Never and Never fake anything in your resume – This is the thumb rule! It can backfire and backfire so badly that it may sometimes be difficult to save your face! Remember that the interviewer is fairly experienced and can easily spot the fake bits very very easily. Never write anything in your resume that’s not true!

6. Dress Well

This is one thing that’s often neglected. It’s important to dress in a presentable way (Formal). No loud dressing or glittery jazz. Wear simple, light colors, Freshly washed and Ironed clothes! Look good and smell great – It shows the vibes of confidence!

7. Have Your Questions too

Interviews are not one-sided conversations anymore. Once the interviewer finished his turn to ask questions, take your turn. Ask any questions related to the company or the job you are applying for.. Just ensure they don’t sound arrogant or like a stubborn head.

8. Be Honest

It’s perfectly ok to not know an answer and say it… Faking and stammering is not! If you don’t know the answer for something, simply say so…but do make sure to ask what the answer of that question once the interview is done. This actually talks about your eagerness to learn new things, which is in reality the most admired quality in a potential employee. You’ll bowl them over.

9. Breathe Easy

Anxiety is the most unnecessary emotion that ruins your performance in most interviews. Just take it easy before walking in to the interview room… You have prepared enough, haven’t you? Breath easy – It surely helps.

10. Thank You Mail

Sending a Thank you mail to the employer irrespective of your selection goes a long way in talking of your attitude of gratitude and politeness. Tell them how thankful you are for the opportunity to interact and to learn.

So, do we see a confident you?  All the best!

Role of Soft Skills in JOB SEARCH!

Why Soft Skills Matter?

Stand out from the crowd.

To get hired is one thing and to keep/sustain a job is another. To grab a job, technical skills are a must, bit, are they enough?!

For example, every dermatologist needs to know how to cure skin infections, but which dermatologist would you prefer? The one who is always busy and in a rush or the one who is not only skilled but also listens to you patiently and understands your problem? The latter, right?

From the above example it is quite evident that Soft Skills matter a lot!

Having technical skills may land you at the job to begin with, but, you know, there are several other levels you must cross to remain there! This is where your technical skills take a back seat perhaps… your soft skills, people skills come to fore front… Your communication skills, emotional quotient, attitude, work ethic along with several other similar attributes constitute soft skills and are very important for a successful career.

You might like to read this: Body Language Do's And Don'ts

Now, the questions I show do these soft skills help you in the long run… As we know working in an organisation would mean associating with several individuals with varied mindsets. It can be quite challenging to co-exist peacefully and bring about a holistically beneficial ambience.   This requires effective delegation skills, motivational skills, and problem solving skills. These are the skills that will take you far in getting along well with people.

Most often, the importance of the soft skills is undermined no emphasis is given to training on this front. Organizations somehow expect its potential candidates to intrinsically possess these skills and how to conduct oneself on the job. They presume everyone must understand that it’s important to be on time, be friendly, take initiative, and give out high quality work.

What are the Most Important Soft Skills?

It is difficult to really pick and chose which soft skills are more important than the others… It essentially depends on your role. Any skill that equips you with the attitude required to smoothly perform your activities while co-existing with several others is considered as valuable!

However, we can easily come up with a generalised list:

1. Communication skills: It goes without saying that communication skills top the charts.  People with good communication skills are in an advantageous position since they can take control of situations right from rapport building to a long lasting relationship. Also can navigate through situations swiftly and smartly.  Working on your communication skill is a good investment of your time, effort and money.

2. Decision Making Skills: The ability of making right decisions takes you a long way in your career. And for obvious reasons the employers look for this skill.

3. Self-motivation skills:  These type of people are the employers favourite simply because they are the self fuelling types. They require minimal supervision and intervention. These type are usually good with interpersonal relationships and spread good vibes around as they usually see the positive side.

You might like to read this: Fresher?! Well, This Is How You Can Get Hired!

4. Leadership skills: They can prove to be ultimate assets for the organization. People possessing this skill are so self-driven, you just assign them a task and they drive it all the way to completion. No reminders or ultimatums. Work just gets done! Now, who doesn’t want this quality?

5. Team-work skills: The ability to work in unison with the team in spite of varied temperaments and ideas is a highly appreciable quality. Team means many individuals and all of them come with different mindsets. To be successful in a career its important to get along well with all of them while enduring the work doesn’t suffer.

6. Creativity and Problem Solving Skills: Creative skills help when we need approach issues with a fresh perspective. For most of them the main limitation can be a mental blockage. So creative thinking can be a major boon in problem solving.

7. Time management Skills: This is crucial, adhering to deadlines in finishing a task is as important if not more than, as doing the job well. Every effort is wasted if stuff is not done at time. This one is a highly treasured skill!

The list can be ongoing as there is a huge variety of soft skills that are appropriate for each role. If one doesn’t possess these skills naturally, no worry. These can be developed by grooming oneself with help of relevant training or online materials. But it’s important to ¬note that technical skills alone won’t take you too far!
