Role of Soft Skills in JOB SEARCH!

Why Soft Skills Matter?

Stand out from the crowd.

To get hired is one thing and to keep/sustain a job is another. To grab a job, technical skills are a must, bit, are they enough?! 



For example, every dermatologist needs to know how to cure skin infections, but which dermatologist would you prefer? The one who is always busy and in a rush or the one who is not only skilled but also listens to you patiently and understands your problem? The latter, right?

From the above example it is quite evident that Soft Skills matter a lot! 

Having technical skills may land you at the job to begin with, but, you know, there are several other levels you must cross to remain there! This is where your technical skills take a back seat perhaps… your soft skills, people skills come to fore front… Your communication skills, emotional quotient, attitude, work ethic along with several other similar attributes constitute soft skills and are very important for a successful career.

Now, the questions I show do these soft skills help you in the long run… As we know working in an organisation would mean associating with several individuals with varied mindsets. It can be quite challenging to co-exist peacefully and bring about a holistically beneficial ambience.   This requires effective delegation skills, motivational skills, and problem solving skills. These are the skills that will take you far in getting along well with people.  

Most often, the importance of the soft skills is undermined no emphasis is given to training on this front. Organizations somehow expect its potential candidates to intrinsically possess these skills and how to conduct oneself on the job. They presume everyone must understand that it’s important to be on time, be friendly, take initiative, and give out high quality work.

What are the Most Important Soft Skills?

It is difficult to really pick and chose which soft skills are more important than the others… It essentially depends on your role. Any skill that equips you with the attitude required to smoothly perform your activities while co-existing with several others is considered as valuable!

However, we can easily come up with a generalised list:

1. Communication skills: It goes without saying that communication skills top the charts.  People with good communication skills are in an advantageous position since they can take control of situations right from rapport building to a long lasting relationship. Also can navigate through situations swiftly and smartly.  Working on your communication skill is a good investment of your time, effort and money.

2. Decision Making Skills: The ability of making right decisions takes you a long way in your career. And for obvious reasons the employers look for this skill. 

3. Self-motivation skills:  These type of people are the employers favourite simply because they are the self fuelling types. They require minimal supervision and intervention. These type are usually good with interpersonal relationships and spread good vibes around as they usually see the positive side.

4. Leadership skills: They can prove to be ultimate assets for the organization. People possessing this skill are so self-driven, you just assign them a task and they drive it all the way to completion. No reminders or ultimatums. Work just gets done! Now, who doesn’t want this quality? 

5. Team-work skills: The ability to work in unison with the team in spite of varied temperaments and ideas is a highly appreciable quality. Team means many individuals and all of them come with different mindsets. To be successful in a career its important to get along well with all of them while enduring the work doesn’t suffer.

6. Creativity and Problem Solving Skills: Creative skills help when we need approach issues with a fresh perspective. For most of them the main limitation can be a mental blockage. So creative thinking can be a major boon in problem solving. 

7. Time management Skills: This is crucial, adhering to deadlines in finishing a task is as important if not more than, as doing the job well. Every effort is wasted if stuff is not done at time. This one is a highly treasured skill! 

The list can be ongoing as there is a huge variety of soft skills that are appropriate for each role. If one doesn’t possess these skills naturally, no worry. These can be developed by grooming oneself with help of relevant training or online materials. But it’s important to ¬note that technical skills alone won’t take you too far!
